The 2020 generation of e-MTBs is here: new motors and larger batteries raise the bar a notch higher. Do the high-end trail bikes fulfil the high expectations? Our group test provides clarity.

Eight high-end e-mountainbikes competed to win the test in the very first issue of EMTB. The majority of these candidates clearly show their origins in the booming city e-bike - in terms of looks, some candidates are a mixture of a hunchbacked pensioner's mobile and a conservative touring mountain bike. Just four years have passed since then, and e-MTBs have blossomed into sporty, stylish off-road machines. A development in fast motion. Carbon fibre wherever you look and high watt-hour batteries that disappear elegantly inside the frame. This is the latest evolutionary stage of e-mountainbikes.

But how good is the 2020 vintage really? And what are the differences in level in a direct comparison? We tested the most exciting e-MTBs with around 150 millimetres of travel and discovered some striking differences. In terms of price, we naturally poached in the upper echelon in our search for the super e-MTB. With an upper limit of 8300 euros, not every manufacturer was able to compete with their top model. If you place the current bikes next to their 2016 counterparts, the leap is huge.

Florentin Vesenbeckh has been on a mountain bike since he was ten years old. Even on his very first tour, he focussed on single trails - and even after more than 30 years in the saddle of an MTB, these are still the quintessence of biking for him. He spent his youth competing in various bike disciplines and later his cycling career was characterised by years as a riding technique coach. Professionally, the experienced test editor now focusses on e-mountainbikes. In recent years, the qualified sports scientist and trained journalist has tested over 300 bikes and more than 40 different motor systems in the laboratory and in practice.
