Ghost is going its own way with a more affordable chassis, which differs from the SL AMR, especially in the main frame. The Kato FS 5 is the only bike in the test group with the new Shimano 2x11 XT groupset. On the climbs, the 42 t sprocket and 26 t chainring provide almost the same gears as a 3x10 drivetrain. However, the high overall weight and the heavy wheels come at the expense of sporty ambitions on the climbs. On descents, the generous 130 mm of travel is clearly noticeable. The comfortable suspension provides a lot of confidence on the trail and allows for high speeds. The voluminous Michelin tyres provide the necessary grip and have enough space in the rear triangle. The rear end, which pumps under chain load, is kept in check by the shock platform.
ConclusionThe bike with the best equipment in the test field shines especially on the downhill. The high weight and drive influences are the price you have to pay on the climbs.
The alternative: For 500 euros more, the Bavarians install a telescopic seat post, high-quality Schwalbe tyres and a more elaborately designed main frame. However, the Ghost SL AMR 5 also weighs a little more due to the additional seatpost.
