The Pinion MGU was the absolute highlight of Eurobike 2023. Motors with integrated manual transmissions have often been seen in the exhibition halls - but mostly in prototype status and with little prospect of major market relevance. Pinion's new product is a different story. For the launch of the product, the gearbox specialists had several well-known manufacturers on board, who presented their bikes with the innovative motor-gearbox unit at the same time. Among them: Swiss e-bike pioneer Flyer and the Goroc TR:X.
The Goroc TR:X is a classic crossover bikeThe bike is more at home between multi-day expeditions and everyday rides than on rough terrain and trails. The moderate equipment and 130 millimetres of suspension travel match this. The geometry has also been trimmed for comfort and long-distance suitability. However, high-quality construction has not been sacrificed. The main frame is made of carbon, and the workmanship is typical Flyer quality.
The bike comes with a belt drive for minimal maintenance. Commuters, all-weather users and frequent riders will be delighted. The permissible total weight of 150 kilos is also impressive. Such a high weight limit is rare for e-mountainbikes. This includes the bike, the rider and all equipment.
One of the hallmarks of Flyer E-MTBs is the convenient sideways battery removal. The brand's Pinion bike also has this feature. The energy source, to which a cover in the frame colour is attached, provides 700 watt hours of capacity. The battery is secured with a key. If you open the lock, the battery can be removed to the side. A handle is attached to the battery itself, which makes handling even easier. If the 700 watt hours are not enough, an additional range extender can be attached to the frame triangle.
There are three equipment variants of the Goroc TR:X. However, at 8699 euros, even the cheapest model is quite expensive. Two of the three models are fully equipped, i.e. mudguards, lighting system, pannier rack, kickstand and a solid frame lock from Abus. The 8.63 XC model, which comes without most of the everyday features, is most clearly geared towards off-road use.
The entry-level model comes with SR Suntour suspension and TRP brakes. Pannier rack, mudguards, front and rear lights and a kickstand are fitted ex works. A high-quality Abus folding lock is also included in the package.
For 300 euros more, there is an update to a Fox suspension with AWL fork and DPS shock, as well as a larger FIT display. The cheaper wheels make way for a system wheelset from Mavic.
The 8.63 XC model has the most mountain bike genes in the series. However, it does without most of the everyday features ex works. It therefore comes without a pannier rack, mudguards, lock and permanently installed lighting system. Great: Optional lights can be easily clipped on via Monkey Link interfaces. A Fox 34 Rhythm, Shimano XT brakes and Schwalbe's fast Wicked Will tyres and slightly wider handlebars complete the touring package.
