In the village, a fat elephant cow stamps her feet nervously. She takes two steps forwards and back again, raises her trunk to the sky and screams deafeningly. Ian keeps the villagers at a distance. "She's having her baby!" Indeed: after a while, the little one becomes visible, slips and finally falls roughly to the ground.
Scientist Ian Douglas Hamilton is in East Africa to research the lives of elephants. My mate Richie Schley and I are here to cross Mount Kenya (5199 m). It is the second highest peak in Africa after Kilimanjaro. When Ian heard about our tour, he spoke to me. On Mount Kenya, the skeleton of an elephant had been spotted from the aeroplane. "Icy Mike" was lying somewhere in a gorge, at an incredible 4500 metres above sea level! Could I bring back a piece of bone if we found the carcass?
