10 fantastic trips for the start of the season

Ten superlatives to combat grey weather boredom: With these tour tips, dreams can come true and the waiting time for the start of the season at home is impressively shortened on the unique trails.

The long winter without a bike tour awakens a longing for the breeze. The anticipation of one of these adventures could sweeten the cold season a little. You can pack your rucksack for these trails:

1st Great Himalayan Crossing: The tour starts quite harmlessly: From Shimla in India, you cycle through thousand-year-old forests. The high valley of Spiti with its monasteries still feels like the Alps. But on the ninth day, you break through the 4000 metre barrier. After that, six passes between 4551 and 5650 metres above sea level (Kardung-La) await you until you reach your destination of Leh. In total: 1200 km, 19000 metres in 19 stages. 2nd North Sea Trail in Sweden: The official North Sea Cycle circuit is about as exciting as the Lake Constance circuit. But if you follow the hiking trail around the North Sea, mountain bikers will also have fun in the lonely wilderness. However, the 370 kilometres along Sweden's south-west coast will be enough. 3rd Italy - Madritschjoch: At 3123 metres above sea level, the Madritschjoch is the highest rideable pass in the Eastern Alps. If the ascent on rough, steep gravel is too tough for you, you can take the gondola in Sulden and then fight your way up the final 500 metres to the pass. Either way, the view and descent are gigantic! Info: www.mountainbiker.it

4th USA - Colorado Trail: From Denver to Durango - the 400-kilometre Colorado Trail has cult status. Towel-width and meticulously maintained by trail builders, it leads right across the Rocky Mountains. Thanks to a trail book, the stages are easy to plan. www.coloradotrail.org

5th France - Mont Chaberton: The king of the entire Alpine arc - at least for bikers. A fortress sits enthroned on the 3131 metre high summit of Mont Chaberton, which can be reached by bike. You can't get any higher in the Alps. A historic trail adventure! www.schymik.de
