What does the insurance pay for damage while flying?
What are the limits of cover for transport damage when travelling by air? What happens if a 4000 euro bike is in the broken bike box? BIKE editor Stefan Frey has done some research.

BIKE reader Sven L. writes: "You recently had an article on the subject of Travelling by plane with a bike. Do you have any further information on the subject of luggage insurance and insurance cover limits? I've been trying to find out for some time what happens if an airline doesn't bring my bike to my holiday destination. How much will the airline pay? Your advice that there is luggage insurance is kindly meant. But is there any insurance that will cover my €3999 Scott Spark 710? Unfortunately, I haven't found one yet."

BIKE editor Stefan Frey answers: "The compensation limit for delayed or lost baggage (Montreal Convention) is 1300 euros. With Lufthansa, for example, the liability limit can be increased by 1000 euros to a maximum of 5000 euros by paying a lump sum of 50 euros each. One way to increase the insurance cover would be to integrate the luggage into the household contents insurance. With HUK, for example, this can be done via Hausrat PLUS. This costs 19 euros more per year. However, luggage is insured for up to 40 per cent of the sum insured (maximum 25,000 euros). This means that the 4000 euros for your bike would be covered here. With Travel Secure, a luggage insurance policy, you can determine the sum insured yourself. The maximum amount is 4500 euros. For a period of ten days, this costs 80 euros."

Stefan Frey is from Lower Bavaria and loves the mossy, loamy trails of the Bavarian Forest as much as the rugged rock of the Dolomites. For technical descents, he is prepared to tackle almost any ascent - under his own steam. As an accessories specialist, he is the first port of call for questions about equipment and add-on parts, while as head of copywriting he sweeps the language crumbs from the pages of the BIKE print editions.
