The Ponale road on Lake Garda is to Lago bikers what the Way of St James is to pilgrims. The road winds its way up to Lake Ledro and rewards cyclists who are keen on altitude with Lake Garda flair and a postcard panorama. And it has been doing so for years. Around 500,000 visitors use the piste between the lake and the rock face every year. However, it was closed in October 2017 (BIKE reported) because a child was critically injured in a serious accident caused by falling rocks.
Over the past five months, construction workers have cleared the rock faces of loose rock and secured some rock faces with steel nets. In addition, the safety wall on the lake side has been raised and wooden railings have been installed in missing places. The adjacent roads and small jumps that had developed in previous years were also levelled during the work, so that the Ponale road now resembles a wide gravel track. The work, which cost around 600,000 euros, will be completed by mid-March. The Ponale road, which is the most important connection for bikers from Lake Garda to the Ledro Valley, should be open to mountain bikers again on 23 March 2018.
