Making MTB excursions with children fun for everyone
Sharing your hobby with your children - then every weekend trip becomes a family celebration. We asked enthusiastic parents what should be on the list for MTB families.

Gunnar Fehlau, cycling journalist: Courage for adventure

Children love cycling. But they also love setting fires, grilling sausages, building dens and exploring. How can you combine the two? On an adventure tour with an overnight stay outdoors on a warm summer night. Experienced junior adventurers won't even be put off by the snow or cold. By the way, children can't be too small or too big for this. Grab the kids while you're still making the decisions! They will love it and gain experiences for life.

Josh Welz, Editor-in-Chief BIKE: Grand Tour of the Alps

You can think what you like about e-mountainbikes. But when it comes to teaching young children about the fascination of big mountains, there's no getting round it. I tried it out last year: My wife and I with e-drives, the five and eight-year-olds on full-suspension trailers. Start near Gries am Brenner, overnight stay in a hut, up to the Brenner border ridge and an 800-metre downhill trail at the end. Two days of family fun in front of a stunning mountain panorama - something that had previously only been possible in hiking boots.

Peter Brodschelm, Transalp record holder: A holiday for life

How do you like this article?

Admittedly: It takes some courage and experience to go on a transalp with your children. But this adventure is guaranteed to strengthen family bonds and bring you closer to your children in a completely new way. This is possible from around twelve years of age, provided you are in good physical condition. Parents should already have transalp experience and know what is important. As preparation or as a gentle alternative, a weekend tour can also be a tremendous experience.

Patricia Roth, BIKE guide and model: Flow baptism

Surfing trails with the whole family? That works perfectly with us thanks to our pedalling bikes. From around the age of three, the children get a feel for trails. We also ride a lot through bike parks on flat flow trails, which makes our two little ones whoop and holler. They particularly like berms and waves. This means the family is together all day and we can do whatever we feel like doing. In terms of riding technique, however, parents should be sure that any risk is taboo!

Henri Lesewitz, BIKE editor: Trail fun for everyone

Do you want to share your passion with your wife and child, but your family are not hardcore bikers? At the Pod Smrkem trail centre, your dream will come true. The climbs are so gentle that even the junior and the lady of the heart can manage them with ease, and the trails are fun without any previous riding experience. Plus: a swimming lake, campsite with campfire guarantee and lots of bike families with potential for new friends. If the Czech Republic is too far, you should try the park in Rabenberg.
