New calendars from old friends: The year is gradually drawing to a close. 2023 once again offers cycling fans the opportunity to be accompanied through the coming twelve months by large-format picture calendars with bicycle motifs. Bicycle enthusiast and graphic artist Jürgen Isendyck portrays a dozen classic models that have shaped the history of cycling. His drawings, also known to many from his excellent bicycle book "Fahrrad verstehen" (Understanding Bicycles), show the bicycles and their construction with almost analytical clarity. Bicycle photographer Peter Rüssmann, on the other hand, stages twelve historic bicycles from the remarkable Bad Brückenau Bicycle Museum with opulence. The lavishly restored gems are each photographed against a suitable backdrop, with two additional pages describing the rare models and placing them in their historical context. Happy New Year!
Just a moment, then they're over... Year after year, the inhabitants of France gather at the roadside, whether on their doorstep or in the rugged mountain landscapes of the Alps, to watch the Tour de France riders arrive and pass through. Much has been written about the fact that for our neighbours, this cycling race has the character of a public festival for everyone. People stand close together, excited and full of eager anticipation or relaxed at a picnic in the countryside, celebrating the festive day with a glass of vin rouge from a folding table. Freelance photographer Herman Seidl from Salzburg photographed this cycle race for thirty years. However, he always turned his gaze and camera away from the sporting spectacle to the scenery on the roadside behind him, documenting the mood and emotions of the spectators. This picture book is a great portrait of the French way of life, because it is guaranteed to be authentic.
Relaxed cycling in a big city like Hamburg is not that easy. Reason enough for the author and Hamburg expert Dörte Nohrden to look for relaxing routes through the metropolitan region. She now describes 15 routes in her cycling book. Around half of them run through the city centre, while the others lead out into the surrounding countryside, for example from Buxtehude into the Alte Land, from Quickborn around the Himmelmoor or from Glückstadt to Elmshorn with plenty of panoramic views of the Elbe. In addition to the cycle route, the author and the book series emphasise enjoyment, romance and relaxation - with correspondingly tempting tips.
Here you'll find all the information you need for the round trip on the Vlaanderen route, around 960 kilometres. Kilometres through the north of Belgium, through the five Flemish provinces with famous cities such as Maastricht, Bruges, Antwerp and of course Brussels. No, the cycle book is not new, but it has been redesigned. There is now also a live update and GPS tracks on the Internet and, as usual, precise route descriptions, lots of location and city maps and tourist information.
Whether these really are the 30 most beautiful cycle routes in Brandenburg, as the title promises, is up to the leisure cyclist to discover for themselves. But the cycle routes in all directions around Berlin have been carefully selected and described, with lots of culinary and cultural tips. Only the maps are a little small in terms of labelling (reading glasses are required!). However, GPS tracks for each tour can be downloaded from the Internet.
