Bicycle cases put to the test
The safety of bicycles is at great risk when they are transported by aeroplane. To ensure that they survive the flight to your holiday in one piece, they should only take off well protected in a bike case. Six models have to prove their qualities in the test.

There are sounds that seem to trigger very specific stimuli in people. As soon as a baggage carousel starts moving with its typical "Taktaktak", air travellers jostle, jostle and push their way to the very front of the black shingled conveyor belt in order - one might assume - to embrace a long-lost friend safe and sound. This is understandable when the cargo is not fine rib underwear, but a much-loved bicycle.

To ensure that your favourite item is transported safely out of the cargo hold, it should be packed appropriately. We show you how and put six bike cases through their paces. Two hard cases and four soft cases are loaded, loaded, pulled, crushed and dropped by us. But first things first. The search for the right means of transport begins with the wheel size. The test candidates should be able to swallow a 21-inch fully. To set the hurdle a little higher: Wheel size 29 inches.

For technical descents, he is prepared to tackle almost any ascent - under his own steam. As an accessories specialist, he is the first port of call for questions about equipment and add-on parts, while as head of copywriting he sweeps the language crumbs from the pages of the BIKE print editions.
