The first gondola took us up to Les Ruinettes in the morning. The Grand Combin is just waking up at this time. Its glaciers are still glowing red in the azure-coloured sky. And we also have the feeling that sleep is still in our eyes, because we can't find any signposts to the bike park. It's certainly not down to our poor knowledge of French - there are definitely no signs. Anyway, we simply take the first path that branches off from the gravel road: wooded ground, lots of roots, but everything is dry and grippy with plenty of flow. A descent that immediately wakes you up. "Stop!" Christophe stops our riding fun. His photographer's eye is already wide awake and has spotted something. He waves us back. Christophe sees things that we would have simply shot past. Maybe it's because he lives here in the region. He lives with his wife in a small chalet down in the valley. In half an hour, he is in the centre of the best ski and bike regions in the world: Verbier, Chamonix, Portes du Soleil. There is practically no mountain here that he doesn't know by name. So, unlike us, he is not surprised that the trail does not take us down to Verbier, but 600 metres below.
