he Matterhorn stretches 4,500 metres into the sky, its neighbours are hardly more slender. Cycling around the Swiss national mountain? A daring idea, spiced up with a 3300 metre pass.

Our tour around the Matterhorn will approach the 3,000 metre mark three times, but once it will go well beyond it: the pass we have targeted for the return journey from Italy to Switzerland uses a weak point between the Matterhorn and the even higher Monte Rosa. The Theodul Pass is 3,300 metres high. Ridiculously low in these surroundings, but higher bike passes in the Alps can only be found by those who spend hours carrying their sports equipment on their shoulders. And according to Christian's information, the Theodul is "almost completely rideable downhill when the glacier snow is still hard".
