The magnificent backdrop was already there: glaciers to touch, alpine pastures, lakes and plenty of mountain railways. But if you wanted to experience the Engadin trails, you not only had to avoid rocks, but also hikers. A plan was needed ...
Alberto is an excavator driver. His job is to prevent divorces. In itself, that's no problem for the Italian. But this time he has to do it quietly. His tools: a shovel and pickaxe - not an excavator. But he has to get to his workplace somehow every day for the next few weeks? That's right. Masterplan project manager Fadri Cazin pushes a mountain bike into Alberto's hand. At the top, sweaty and having arrived in Val Suvretta, his real task unfolds before him: Val Suvretta. A huge, gently sloping high mountain basin, at the bottom of which a small stream gurgles out of the valley. Parallel to this, a blocked bumpy path tries to do the same. It is the "divorce tour". Couples who have tried this path uphill to date are said to have called each other everything in their despair. "Turn this trail into a flow trail for mountain bikers!" Fadri Cazin, the project manager of the masterplan, had told him.
Flow is the theme in the Upper Engadin. Concepts for downhill trails and man-made bike parks have always ended up in the wastepaper basket with tourism managers. Too radical, wrong target group. But this flow concept sounded promising: developing existing trails for bikers in such a way that they are also attractive for normal touring bikers. So attractive that the designated hiking trails pale in comparison - even without prohibition signs. This would practically eliminate collisions between bikers and hikers. Fadri clearly enjoys our test ride on the new panoramic trail.
