All hell broke loose again this morning at Europe's highest fairground. Motorbike freaks, classic car fans and adrenaline junkies on four wheels have already scrubbed up the 48 hairpin bends from Prad to the 2757-metre-high Stilfserjoch in the first morning light. There they mingle with busloads of tourists and populate the cafés at the side of the road. A few professional skiers stalk between them, having already trained on the last snowfields of the glacier in the morning.
From up here, where I'm hanging, the turmoil on the Joch looks like the landscape of a toy railway. I secure myself to the wire rope with my left hand, while my right balances the lead-heavy e-MTB on my rucksack. Step by step, I work my way up and ask myself why I'm doing this to myself. "Think about the price-performance ratio!" Fadri grinds out between his teeth. "Instead of 500 metres of miserable slog on a classic bike, you have 50 metres of despair on an e-MTB - but then you have 450 metres of fun." That's exactly right. We overtook a group of normal bikers on the first steep 300 metres of the trail. They looked fit, but already had to push because of the gradient. I was happy to put up with the 50 metres of climbing.
