Hardly any tourists stray into the south-west of Sardinia. According to the map, there aren't even any paths here. But there are mountain bike trails - and they all end at the beach at some point.

When the sun sinks into the sea, I always feel like I'm about to tip over backwards. Because you can see so clearly how fast the earth is actually turning. I almost automatically tighten my grip on the handlebars. But I have to do that now anyway: the trail that cuts through the yellow-red maquis in front of us doesn't take any major detours down to the beach. It wants to go straight to the sea. And so do we, because the light is almost gone and there's a beach bar with fresh Ichnusa beer waiting for us down there. We plunge into the last descent of the day, each of us leaving behind a small cloud of dust.

Sardinia, south-west coast: a region that has been largely spared from tourism on the island. A few ruined buildings in this landscape tell you why. Minerals were mined here in the 1980s. The rocky, dusty ground here is practically riddled with tunnels and mines. But of course the minerals also had to be transported away. And so a really exciting network of paths was created here, leading down to forgotten bays by the sea. An absolute dream for mountain bikers.
