Only rarely do bikers in the Alps get closer to heaven than in the Italian Val di Susa. On old military tracks, the tours even crack the magical 3000 metre mark.
Kilometres of gravel roads and trails stretch over the mountain ridges along the Italian-French border. Created over 250 years ago by troops from the opposing nations to secure supplies for the front lines. Even on the main road up from Susa, you pass bulky fortresses and on rocky outcrops, forts with gloomy embrasures watch over every narrow passage. We don't have to give up our plan to break the 3,000 metre mark either:
From Bardonecchia, another seemingly endless ribbon of gravel winds its way to Col Sommeiller with its snowfield. The actual summit of the pass is only at 2,996 metres, but a final stitch leads to a small viewing hill above the glacier. Your pulse is pounding in your temples and your lungs are frantically searching for oxygen in the thin air. The chain has been rotating in low gear for hours anyway. Then it's done: the altimeter reads 3032 metres. In front of the handlebars lies the white-brown remains of the once magnificent Glacier Sommeiller.
