Italy/Switzerland: Lake Maggiore
Lake Maggiore is actually Italian. Only the northern tip protrudes into Swiss Ticino. Here the mountains are higher, the trails longer and palm trees grow here too. (BIKE 7/2007 - Part 4 of the lakes series)

Lake Maggiore is the second largest lake in Italy after Lake Garda. Its northernmost part lies in Ticino, in Switzerland. Of all the Italian lakes, it is probably the most noble. From the beautiful town of Stresa in Italy with its Belle Epoque villas and hotel palaces to the perfectly preserved Locarno in Switzerland with its narrow streets and the famous jazz festival in Ascona. The mountains get steeper and higher the further north you go. While the trails in the south of the lake still have a pre-alpine character, they climb to alpine heights in the north.
