Travelling by bike on the plateau of the Seven Municipalities is an ambivalent story. This plateau stretches for tens of kilometres between Trentino and Veneto. To the north, the plateau drops steeply into the Valsugana. To the south, it marks the end of the Alps. Never before have I found such a wide network of well-signposted, official routes. But it is only when you leave the signposted network of trails that you realise the true potential of this biking region. In the Venetian part of the plateau in particular, countless mule tracks and front tracks lead through the karst, opening up every last remote hill. There is hardly a rock that is not perforated with tunnels and shelters. Anyone who sets off on an exploration tour up here will find enough material for more than just "A year on the plateau" - to freely quote Emilio Lussu's famous World War II book. The flipside: In the last three days on tour between Zebio and Ortigara, I have seen more cemeteries than in my entire life before.
