San Vigilio is located right at the entrance to the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park - one of the most beautiful bike spots in the Dolomites and the Alps.

What is beautiful? This question is not so easy to answer. Opinions differ when it comes to beauty. It is subject to taste and follows fashion. Beauty is often fleeting, even in people. The beauty of the Dolomites, on the other hand, is eternal. And the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park could emerge as the "Next Top Region" from a casting of the most beautiful Alpine regions. Hans Vollmann could fit in well on the jury of a casting show. The bike guide from St. Vigil has seen all the rich and beautiful people in the world, all the stars and starlets. Hans spent 25 years as a bartender in the nightclub at the Monte Carlo Casino. Then the scene changed: in the mid-nineties, he was drawn back home. Soon after, he also started biking and not much later, he guided the first guests through his home town.

If you tackle the ascent from the Pederü hut to the Fanes Alm with Hans, you will come a little closer to the realisation that you don't need much to be happy, but you do need the right things - pedal stroke by pedal stroke. "Deceleration" is a magic word for urban stress therapy. The treatment is free here, it doesn't cost a cent, just a little energy. The climbs are not easy. All the greater the satisfaction when they are done.

The Fanes Alp is one of those magical worlds shrouded in legend, whose beauty has given rise to fascinating stories. The inhabitants of the "Parlamente delle Marmotte", the parliament of the marmots, come to greet us on the high plateau. They whistle to us from the meadow steps in the grey rock faces.
