Piedmont has always been the bone of contention between Italy and France. The armed forces left behind a network of military tracks that climbed up to 3000 metres. Combined with the freeride trails of modern times, this is the perfect symbiosis for magnificent tours.

Impressive mountain massifs frame the sun terrace on which Sauze d'Oulx lies at the far end of the Susa Valley. The king in the round is undoubtedly the 3138 metre high Mont Chaberton, which dominates the valley with its pyramid-like shape. The fort on its summit makes the image of a ruler perfect, as the well-preserved battlements look like a crown from a distance. If you look very closely, you can see wafer-thin lines engraved like artistic tattoos on every flank of the mountain, sometimes dead straight, sometimes wildly jagged, spiralling up to dizzying heights. Guido and I are also travelling along one of those old military supply routes. From Sauze, a gravel track leads up to Colle Basset, where we meet the famous Strada dell'Assietta. Over a distance of around 30 kilometres, this legendary ridge road runs along the mountain ridge between Val di Susa and Val Chisone, offering great views. In terms of altitude, it never once falls below the 2000 metre mark. However, the way in which the road was constructed is spectacular and can be compared to the Passo Tremalzo on Lake Garda.
