Italy: Lake Como
Lake Como lies between Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore, just outside Milan. In summer, it is the holiday destination for city dwellers. Otherwise, it is a still water with top bike qualities. (BIKE 6/2007 - Part 3 of the lakes series)

We are standing above Varenna, on the eastern shore of the eastern arm of Lake Como. The "Sentiero del Viandante" is an ancient path once used by travellers between the Po Valley and the Valtellina. From our vantage point on the ridge, we can clearly see the fork in the lake. The rooftops of Bellagio crowd the tip of the wedge of land that cuts Italy's third largest lake in two to the south. The lake is surrounded by 170 kilometres of shoreline and mountains stagger in all directions - this area must be a paradise for mountain bikers, you might think. But until now, the "Lario" - as Lake Como used to be called - has been a blank spot on the biking map. In any case, there is still no tour book worth mentioning for the area.
