Italy: First ascent of Mittagstal
The Mittagstal is one of the most impressive mountaineering routes in the Alps. BIKE test leader Markus Greber, together with Hans Rey and mountain guide Christian "Pico" Piccolruaz, ventured on a first ascent by bike. (BIKE 3/2006)

Being the first to cycle through the Mittagstal valley - the idea had been haunting me for years. But the only thing I knew for sure was that this valley was one of the most extreme bike adventures in the world, both in terms of landscape and riding technique. Apart from that, planning and realising the trip was a calculation with several unknowns. On the map, the route is almost entirely marked as a dashed line, i.e. a via ferrata. In skiing circles, the Pordoi Forcella is considered a test of courage even for experts. We have to carry ourselves up there. We knew that the cable car does not take bikes. Only the traverse from the Pordoi Pass to the Boe Hut at 2873 metres seems rideable for mere mortals; the single trail runs almost parallel to the contour line. This is where the midday valley begins.

Surrounded by huge rock towers, the Val di Mezdi cuts through the Sella massif to the north. The via ferrata ends after around four kilometres in the small village of Golfosco. The landscape here has even earned Hollywood honours. Some scenes from the Stallone film "Cliffhanger" were shot here.
