Monte Cimone (2165 m) in the Apennines south of Modena is the home of Tortellini, Lambrusco, Alberto Tomba - and recently also of freeriders. (BIKE 11/2004)

Modena is the home of tortellini. Every mum in the region can knead the round dumplings herself. They are filled with meat, cheese or vegetables. A little Parmigiano Reggiano from the neighbouring province of Reggio Emilia and a bottle of Lambrusco complete the culinary poem. While we lean back with full bellies after lunch, the locals are already raving about how we're about to burn off the calories again.

The mountain region behind Fanano became famous in the mid-1980s thanks to the former skiing world champion Alberto Tomba "La Bomba". The carabiniere from Bologna learnt to ski here. His most loyal fans came from the Sestola ski area. They waved their flags during almost all the World Cup broadcasts on television. But when the spring sun burns the snow off the slopes, the region around Monte Cimone becomes quiet. That's why the operators of the four chairlifts decided to keep their lifts open in summer too - for bikers.
