Italy: Crossing the Dolomites
As a mountain war, it was unique. Never before had two armies faced each other in such a wide-ranging and protracted war of position as the Austrians and Italians in the First World War. The front from the Puster Valley through the southernmost Dolomites to Monte Grappa was particularly dramatically contested. We wanted to trace this line and its old military routes. There were situations where we definitely needed a schnapps. Also because of the sensational landscape, of course ...

Robert had the idea. In real life, the thirty-something is a banker and footballer, in virtual life he is a Dolomite touring professor. On the Internet, there is no question about the Dolomites that he leaves unanswered. Trails, huts, peaks, war history - Robert knows it all and has been there with his grandfather since he was a child. Now he has unearthed this route along the still unknown front line from the First World War. From Toblach in the Puster Valley along the southernmost Dolomites to Bassano del Grappa. He reckons it will take him seven days. The route is in his head and can be called up at any time.

But as a passenger, you are soon limited to simply following the worn tyres of your old hardtail. The staccato of completely unfamiliar path and place names only serves to throw you off your stride. But I have already heard of Monte Spina. On its meadow ridge, a trail stretches southwards like a crest.

The article about the crossing of the Dolomites including the road book is available below as a PDF download to supplement the article.
