Cyclists' mountain: zigzagging up Monte Velo
Cyclists' mountain: zigzagging up Monte Velo
BIKE chief reporter Henri Lesewitz's favourite tour on Lake Garda is the MTB tour up Monte Velo, because it clears your thighs and your head.

Tour info: 44.15 km, 1387 m elevation gain, 3:30 h

Degree of difficulty: ** (max. 5 stars)

From Riva or Torbole, cycle along the cycle path along the Sarca to Arco. Continue along the main road to the Bolognano/San Martino junction. Here, soon turn left and follow the signs for Monte Velo uphill. The little-used mountain road winds uphill at a mostly moderate gradient and eventually changes to gravel. After a little over 1000 metres in altitude, you think you've made it, but after a short descent, there are another 150 metres in altitude on an alpine path. The summit is finally reached in Santa Barbara. The route now descends to Malga Fiavei on a gentle forest trail before zigzagging down a gravel descent that leads to Bolognano.

Afterwards I treat myself to an evening at the Alla Lega in Arco. The frescoed vaulted cellar dates back to the 16th century and the pasta is fresh. www.ristoranteallalega.com
