What do bad weather and trail closures have in common? In an indoor bike park, you couldn't care less about either. Even if we prefer to practise our hobby outdoors on the trails, indoor bike trails could become the next big thing in urban leisure activities alongside fitness studios, fun pools and climbing gyms - regardless of the weather and (almost) around the clock. The USA had the world's first (Ray's MTB Parkaccording to its own statement since 2004) and now also the largest (Mega-Cavernindoor bike park (around 30000 m²). And in Europe?

The first indoor bike parks in Switzerland, by their own account Pfäffikon and in Sittard (more information below) copied the Americans in 2014 and built indoor obstacle courses for mountain bikers, BMX riders and dirt jumpers on around 2500 and 6000 m² respectively: pump tracks, jump lines and pits filled with foam chips, into which you can dive smoothly even after the most botched jumps without breaking all your bones - so-called foampits. Bikers will find even more room for manoeuvre at the Stride indoor bike park in Strasbourg, France, the largest in Europe at 12,000 m².

Germany's first indoor bike park could soon be built in Munich. The initiators of the 360 indoor bike park are planning a "bike playground for children and families, for young and old, for clubs and individual athletes, for beginners, experienced riders and pros from the mountain bike, BMX, dirt and trial sectors" on an area of 3,000 square metres. Although this is still a dream of the future, the
Survey
is currently determining what an indoor bike park in Munich should have.

Using the example of the Wood15located just over the German border in Sittard in the Netherlands, we show what this can look like:

Idea: Dutchmen Marc Trines and Jaap van Hoof came up with the idea when they were once again fed up with the miserable weather. An indoor bike hall seemed like the ideal solution. They realised their idea in 2014.

Sebastian Brust was born in 1979 and was originally socialised on his grandmother's folding bike, but has mainly been riding studded tyres since his fifth birthday. Loves all kinds of bikes - and merging with nature. Believes that disc brakes are much safer today than they were 15 years ago and thinks he has helped with his brake and pad tests. However, the trained vehicle technology engineer very much regrets that the bicycle industry is orientating itself on what he considers to be the wrong ideals of the car industry. At BIKE, he corrects, produces and organises digital content on the website.
