Two day tours between the Weser and the mountains
The Weser cycle path is popular with cycle tourists. On the tour through the mountains, you have the roads almost to yourself and great views over the Weserbergland.

The plan was and is good, that's for sure. The idea was to cycle one day on the Weser cycle path from Hamelin to Höxter and cycle the second day through the hills of the Weser Uplands back to the Pied Piper town. Very easy on an e-bike, without stress and without too much effort - that was the plan.

The only bad thing was that we ended up in the hills on the first day due to a diversion behind Bodenwerder and had to climb quite a bit. Because the plan to ride through the low mountain range is only a good plan as long as you have sufficiently charged the battery on the e-bike. But we had already used up quite a lot of power that day - riding "turbo" is more fun than "tour" or "eco".

The bars on the bike computer display became fewer and fewer, but the climb just wouldn't end. We had to climb to well over 350 metres. In turbo mode, the battery would have lasted just under twenty kilometres, and we soon began to feel a little sick that we would run out of juice at some point. So we downshifted and rode up the mountains in Eco mode, which is about as strenuous as riding a touring bike without assistance.

But at least we knew that it was actually a really good plan. As beautiful as the Weser cycle path may be, the off-the-beaten track really does offer wonderful views. And the worry that our battery power would soon be at zero soon subsided. Firstly, we could have taken a break somewhere and recharged the batteries, and secondly, there are the descents where you can simply switch off the bike motor and save energy. And what's more, it's a hell of a lot of fun hurtling down the hairpin bends from the Ottenstein plateau to Brevörde on the Weser. ...

The MYBIKE tour tips for the Weserbergland

Tour 1: On the Weser cycle path, 69 km, 200 m elevation gain, max. gradient 4%

Surface: at the beginning often interlocking stone, then predominantly asphalt and only very rarely easily passable gravel

The signposting from Hameln railway station to Bodenwerder is immaculate, and you often roll along with a view of the river. In Bodenwerder, there are no signs to Holzminden on the eastern side of the river; obviously they want people to visit Bodenwerder and the Münchhausen Museum. On the west side of the Weser, the cycle path then leads along the country road towards Polle and Holzminden. It is nicer to stay west of the Weser (see GPX track), otherwise you can take the ferry in Polle. From Holzminden to Höxter, the route west of the river is recommended.

Tour 2: Through the mountains, 63 km, 800 m elevation gain, max. gradient 10%

Surface: almost exclusively asphalt, after Welsede the cycle path leads through the forest for a short time and is very soggy when it rains

From Höxter, take the back roads up to the Bremerberg. Until the climb up to the village of Köterberg, the route goes up and down on small country roads with little traffic and beautiful views. From Köterberg there is a really long descent through the forest, after Glesse too - and from Lichtenhagen there are even hairpin bends down into the valley. From Welsede, you cycle again on a signposted cycle path towards Hameln, and after Emmerthal you cycle the last few kilometres on the Weser cycle path again.
