Up to lofty peaks, down to sparkling mountain lakes: our great west-east traverse through the Bavarian Alps leads in seven stages from Forggensee via Schliersee and Chiemsee to Königssee.

Tour information for the Transalp through the Bavarian Alps

Stage 1 I 44 km I 1300 hm
Starting point: Halblech, Am Mühlbach car park (800 m). Along the Halblech via the Bockstallsee lake to the Kenzenhütte and the waterfall at the end of the valley. On a trail with about 150 metres of pushing distance to the Bäckenalmsattel (1536 m). Continue on the path downhill into the Sägerbach valley and on the forest path to Linderhof Castle. Now on gravel until shortly before Graswang and follow the Elmau valley southwards uphill. At the saddle (approx. 1200 m) descend into the Loisach valley (Ochsenhütte). Through the forests at Zirmerskopf and Vordermoos to the Eibsee.

Stage 2 I 38 km I 1530 hm
From the Eibsee (1000 m) on a gravel path uphill through the forests on the north side of the Waxenstein massif to the Eibsee-Höllental high trail and from there on trails to Obergrainau and Hammersbach (758 m). Continue to the valley station and on gravel and trails (alternatively stay on the gravel path) to the Kreuzalm mountain inn (1600 m). Continue towards Osterfelder, soon turn left onto the Bernadeinsteig (hikers have priority). Keep left north of the Mauerscharte, follow the forest trail briefly uphill and then downhill. Finally, take the forest path westwards above the Partnachklamm gorge towards Partenkirchen. At the entrance to the gorge, head towards Wildenau and uphill to Hintergraseck. Follow the forest path to Schloss Elmau and on to Ferchensee and Lautersee. (Alternative: from the entrance to the Partnach Gorge to the ski stadium, take the Eckbauer cable car to Eckbauer (1237 m) and continue to Elmau).

Stage 3 I 49 km I 1240 hm
From Lautersee to Mittenwald to the Karwendel railway. At the subway under the main road, take the hiking and cycle path towards the Isar reservoirs and Krün. At the Isar bridge in Krün (875 m), stay on the right-hand side of the Isar and continue straight ahead, soon uphill on gravel to the Fischbachalm (1402 m). Follow the forest path downhill and finally uphill again to the Soiernhaus material cable car (approx. 1350 m). Now follow the trail, which is easy to ride at first, but later becomes rough with hairpin bends and sliding passages to the Soiernhaus (1611 m) and the Soiernsee lakes. Back to the material cable car, first downhill for a while, then uphill on a gravel path towards Fischbachalm, but before that turn right towards Vorderriss at the junction at approx. 1280 m altitude. Follow the forest path to Vorderriss. On gravel paths south of the main road towards Sylvensteinsee. Briefly on the main road and at the western end on the gravel path along the lakeshore to Fall.

Stage 4 I 60 km I 1760 hm
From Fall on tarmac to Sylvensteinsperre. Follow the Toni-Seber-Weg (Munich-Venice cycle path) to Fleck. Keep right there towards Holz and north towards Hohenburger Weiher. In Hirschbachtal follow the forest track up the valley to Hirschtalsattel. Take the root trail downhill into Söllbachtal (turn right at the junction, do not turn left onto the Stinkergraben trail, which is almost impossibly muddy). Turn right onto the forest track heading south (signpost Hirschberg-Runde). At an altitude of approx. 1150 m, turn right onto the gravel road to the Almsattel between Hirschberg and Silberkopf (alternatively, stay on the signposted Hirschberg-Runde and take the gravel road towards Kreuth). From the Almsattel take the forest trail and follow the Hirschberg trail (VA-A55 and H2) to Kreuth. Via Scharling to Rottach and along the Weißach dam to Tegernsee. From Tegernsee on a steep gravel path (toboggan run) to Neureuth and then right to the Gindelalm. Short ascent to the Auerberg and via Huberspitz on a forest trail to Schliersee.

Stage 5 I 54 km I 1980 hm
Starting point: Schliersee, free car park and camper van site opposite the outdoor pool. Picture-book mountain landscapes around the Soinsee and the Großtiefentalalm between Schliersee and Bayrischzell as well as a crisp trail descent from Sudelfeld to Brannenburg are among the highlights of this stage. After almost 2000 metres in altitude, you've really earned a cold hop in the idyllic Duftbräu beer garden on the Samerberg.

Stage 6 I 86 km I 1380 hm
Starting point: Duftbräu, Samerberg. After a relaxed ride through the forest and meadows on the Samerberg, a great - sometimes crisp, sometimes a little rough - trail awaits on the descent from the Hofalm to Aschau. Then it's time to relax on Lake Chiemsee, with great mountain views from the beaches at Gammerzipf. At the vantage point above the Bründling-Alm on the Hochfelln (ascent by cable car to the middle station), you can get a bird's eye view of the lake. The wild and romantic route continues into the Urschlauer Ache valley with a trail passage to Urschlau before the final spurt via Ruhpolding to Inzell.

Stage 7 I 63 km I 2000 hm
Starting point: Inzell. A royal stage at the end: lots of riding fun and a few short pushing passages at the start on the Soleweg towards Weißbach. After the ascent to the Moosenalm and the descent (partly trail) to Schwarzbachwacht, the long final ascent to the Kührointalm awaits behind Ramsau with majestic views of the Watzmann and Königssee.
