Elbe Cycle Route: Germany's most popular river cycle route

It is Germany's star: the Elbe cycle path combines culture and nature in Saxony. While the rocks of Saxon Switzerland tower dramatically in the east, church spires greet you in Pirna and along Dresden's famous silhouette the Frauenkirche, Residenzschloss, Hofkirche, Zwinger and Semperoper. The flat tarmac road continues via Radebeul with its pretty village green in Altkötzschenbroda past the hilly hills of the Saxon Wine Route to the porcelain and wine town of Meissen. And when the lovely Elbe wine village of Diesbar-Seußlitz lies behind you, the Lutheran town of Torgau with Hartenfels Castle comes into view further north. There are plenty of cycle-friendly hosts and rest stops along the way.

Blockline: Freedom and adventure like in New Zealand or Canada

The Blockline in the triangle between Seiffen, Mulda, Altenberg and Holzhau is an adventure mountain bike trail for sporty families with children aged eight and over. On three exciting laps with 140 off-road kilometres, young and old MTB explorers can expect the uplifting feeling of endless freedom in the Ore Mountains. Huge, breathtaking wooden portals point the way to impressive panoramas, unique rock formations, lush mountain meadows and idyllic streams. These are three loops full of freedom, longing and adventure with sensational panoramic views from the free-standing Schwartenberg, in the rippling valley of the water mills along the Gimmlitz or with insights into the fascinating world of wood art.

How do you like this article?

The Musicians' Cycle Route through the idyllic "Vogtland Music Corner" promises a sensual experience for the eyes and ears. The circular tour starts in the small town of Adorf to Markneukirchen, the centre of German orchestral instrument making for over 300 years. Cyclists get to know the "balcony of the Vogtland" in Schöneck. Klingenthal is best known for its harmonica and accordion production. The neighbouring town of Zwota has also made harmonica history. And when the route finally climbs 900 metres up to Erlbach, you can experience pure musical instrument making in over 30 workshops for plucked, bowed and wind instruments before returning to the starting point via the Schwarzbachtal cycle path.

Neuseenland cycle route: through the lake landscape at the gates of Leipzig

Leipzig, also known as a water city, is very easy to discover by bike. Lake Cospuden with its marina and beach is just a few minutes' cycle ride from Leipzig City Park. Just like Lake Markkleeberg, Lake Störmthal, Lake Zwenkau or Lake Hain, a wide range of leisure activities and relaxation are on offer here. From white water rafting in the canoe park, diving, sailing and paddling to action in the Markkleeberg leisure park, everything is possible. Culture is also on offer: such as the VINETA, a floating island, and the open-air museum Bergbau-Technik-Park.

Fruit country route: Cycling twice as healthy

Fruit trees are the hallmark of the Obstland Route around Leipzig. This 58-kilometre circular route leads through the largest contiguous fruit-growing area in the Free State of Saxony, mostly away from busy roads. It connects the long-distance cycle route Mulderadweg and the regional main cycle route Döllnitztal. The idyllic route consists of various sections and can be explored as one large "outer" circular route or in smaller stages. You can rely on the continuous signposting. Along the way, exciting plantation tours and press house visits invite you to experience the entire process from tree to bottle at first hand.

Stoneman Miriquidi Road: The be-all and end-all for road cyclists

Photo: Felix MeyerPhoto: Felix Meyer

The Stoneman Miriquidi Road in the Ore Mountains is the ultimate challenge for racing cyclists. From A for Altenberg to O for Oberwiesenthal - the approximately 290 kilometres elicit cheers from the "Stonemen" when they have conquered the 4,900 metres in altitude, 13 steep ramps and 13 checkpoints of the three stages through the Czech Egergraben and over the Ore Mountain ridge on their racing bikes. Among them are also checkpoints of the legendary Stoneman Miriquidi mountain bike: Klínovec (1,244 m), the Fichtelberg (1,214 m) and the Bärenstein (897 m). Deep-rooted mining traditions can be felt here and the UNESCO World Heritage Site can be experienced. Show mines invite you to explore the origins of the "mountain clamour" that was triggered by the first silver discoveries in 1168.
