Most long-distance cyclists bridge the only significant ascent from Kirchzarten up towards Hinterzarten with an attractive train journey on the Höllentalbahn railway. From Hinterzarten, you cycle leisurely downhill past the mountains and moors of the Upper Black Forest, past Lake Titisee and the impressive Wutach Gorge.
The route then leads along the High Rhine through several medieval towns to Basel. This is followed by a detour to the French town of Huningue on the edge of the oldest nature reserve in Alsace. Back in Germany, the Southern Black Forest Cycle Route crosses the idyllic Markgräflerland region with its vineyards and spa towns and leads back to the university city of Freiburg.
Character:
The Southern Black Forest Cycle Route runs around the Southern Black Forest Nature Park on predominantly tarmac and almost traffic-free field and forest paths with only a few ascents (the ascent from Kirchzarten to Hinterzarten is completed on the Höllentalbahn railway).

Freiburg - Kirchzarten (Höllentalbahn) - Hinterzarten - Titisee - Neustadt - Lenzkirch - Weizen - Waldshut - Bad Säckingen - Rheinfelden - Basel - Bad Krozingen - Freiburg
