Sightseeing by bike in Leipzig
Unrivalled industrial heritage and German-German history. There are many reasons in favour of a city trip to Leipzig. We explored it by bike.

No city in Germany is currently more attractive. Leipzig is growing rapidly. After its Cinderella existence before and after reunification, Leipzig is currently in demand among young people like never before. Unlike in Berlin, Hamburg or Munich, there is still affordable open space here and the old industrial areas are an ideal meeting place for creative people.

Parks, lakes and trendy neighbourhoods

What few people know: Leipzig is ideal for exploring by bike, as the city has done a lot to promote this in recent years. In the compact city centre, bicycles are the number one means of transport anyway, so cars have to stay outside for the most part. But it is easy to escape the city centre by bike. Extensive green zones and new cycle paths make this possible without traffic. We have tried it out.

3 tour suggestions to follow

Our first tour leads directly from the city centre almost exclusively through the countryside. The destination in the south is Leipzig's New Lakeland, which was created from the flooded coal mining areas. The route first heads south through the city's parks. The expanse of the Clara Zetkin Park and the adjoining floodplain forest completely shield you from the hustle and bustle of the city. Idyllic allotment garden colonies and chic yachts on Lake Cospuden form clear contrasts. A beach bar in the middle of the city? Pier 1 makes it possible.

On the way back, the 40-kilometre route leads through the flashy Connewitz district and on to the gigantic Monument to the Battle of the Nations. Old and modern urban development then collide on the way to and through the old trade fair centre. A great finish: the trendy Südvorstadt neighbourhood.

Tour two sets its sights on the stylish creative district of Plagwitz on a short 15-kilometre loop, which is considered the heart of Leipzig's cultural scene with the site of the old cotton mill. Before that, however, we pass the magnificent Wilhelminian-style villas and the canals of "Little Venice".

Tour 3 leads 45 kilometres out into the surrounding countryside. A cycling festival is held in Leipzig every year. The LVZ-Post-Tour was developed for this event.
