The route is particularly interesting for cyclists because of the gentle river landscape. What's more, there are many pretty little towns and places of interest along the route that invite you to take a break.
The Wörnitz has its source in Schillingsfürst and meanders from there through wide meadow valleys, then through the Geopark Ries, breaks through the Riesrand heights near Harburg and flows into the Danube in Donauwörth.
The exact route is marked on a newly published cycle map, along with Deutsche Bahn railway stations and parking spaces for motorhomes. If the 106 kilometres from the source to the estuary are not enough, there are connections to other cycle paths such as the Danube cycle path, the cycle path from crater to crater in the Geopark Ries or a 3-day tour along the Wörnitz and Altmühl rivers. Along the way, the market square in Oettingen with its baroque and half-timbered facades invites you to linger. In Harburg, the former Staufferburg castle towering high above the town is well worth a detour. In Donauwörth, the Käthe Kruse Doll Museum awaits doll lovers.
A dedicated website for the Wörnitz cycle path is currently being created. Detailed tour descriptions, information on accommodation, repair workshops and bike hire can be found on the Donau-Ries tourism region websites, www.ferienland-donau-ries.de and Romantic Franconia, www.romantisches-franken.de
