The start could be a little delayed, as the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Regensburg with its picturesque old town deserves an extensive tour. The route then winds its way from the Danube valley along the River Regen from west to east through the Bavarian Forest. In part, you cycle on a disused railway line, at least mostly on well-kept paths with little traffic, even if they are not always asphalted. Culture fans can look forward to mighty monasteries and parish churches, such as those in Walderbach and Chammünster, as well as castles and palaces worth seeing, such as those in Blaibach and Miltach. For cyclists who are primarily interested in unspoilt nature, we recommend a trip to the Bavarian Forest National Park from Zwiesel or Bayerisch-Eisenstein, perhaps with a short detour to the neighbouring Czech Republic.
Character
Long flat sections and gentle climbs characterise the river cycle path, around two thirds of which is asphalted. The section between Viechtach and Regen, where the route leaves the Regental valley, is somewhat steeper and more challenging.
