The Augsburg Nature Park, the Western Forests, borders directly on the western residential area of the city. Meadows, forest humps, birdsong - and at regular intervals a fighter jet shoots over the coniferous treetops. The mountain bikers of the Swabian Eurofighter production town have long since come to terms with the thundering greetings from Donauwörth. After all, they are allowed to use the dense network of trails through the nature park without any bans. The region south of the B300, which cuts the nature park in two, is particularly interesting. You enter the nature park directly behind Stadtbergen. Another top spot around Augsburg is Derchinger Forst in the north-west of the city.
The density of rooty natural trails is particularly high here. However, you first have to learn to recognise the entrances. If you just crank off into the blue, you will probably end up circling through the forest on the gravelled main paths without success. You really do need a trained eye to recognise the path junctions. No wooden sign, however small, indicates the change of direction. The first few metres are often inconspicuously overgrown, but then the trees soon make way for a clear forest floor track. The paths curve wildly around the tree trunks and rattle over carpets of roots of varying degrees of difficulty. Trail fans can let off steam for hours here - if they know where to go. This GPS tour will help you to train your eye for the trail entrances. Because there is plenty more to discover in the Western Forests.
The tour: A total of 39.7 km | 560 m elevation gain
The tour starts at the Wellenburg castle restaurant and initially follows the gravel road northwards, from which the first trail soon branches off over the Schlaugraben. Via Anhausen, Oberschönefeld, Döpshofen and Burgwalden back to Wellenburg. A nice place to stop for refreshments: the Engelshof forest restaurant, just before the loop around the reservoirs. In spring, some trails can be boggy and steep descents slippery. Forestry work possible!
