For around 90 years, giant excavators dug through the earth in the south of Leipzig and extracted brown coal. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, these huge excavations have been slowly recultivated and partially flooded. The result is a large recreational and nature reserve with many lakes, bathing beaches and beer gardens, as well as tranquil forests and reed banks. The Neuseenland route connects nine of these new lakes from the southern edge of the city of Leipzig on a large, one hundred kilometre long loop. If you want to jump into the water, take a boat trip or even go for a swim, plan at least two to three stages. The route is predominantly flat, mostly on separate cycle paths, country lanes and forest tracks, although these are not always tarmac.
