A healthy lobby is everything. This also applies to the planning of bike trails in the German forest. So it's a good thing that the sons of the Willingen district forester, Patrick and Dominik, are keen downhill bikers. With such family ties, it's safe to say that at least one of the forest wardens is well-disposed towards mountain bikers. But forester Schumm is not an isolated case in Willingen. "The foresters even think along with us," explains Volker Schröder, initiator of the BIKE Festival and mastermind when it comes to mountain biking. "Sometimes," he adds with satisfaction, "they even suggest where a trail could be created." Foresters planning bike trails makes the operators of many a bike park in Germany green with envy. Willingen is probably the absolute dream for trail builders. Well, what do you mean by dream - more like reality. Upland offers several million people in the conurbations of North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse, countless hikers and more and more bikers a wonderful recreational area just an hour or two's drive away.
