The Schwarze Grat is the highest point of the Adelegg, a tranquil mini-mountain range between Isny and Kempten. You will look in vain for rocky peaks here. Instead, the eye is spoilt by gentle curves and lush green alpine meadows, where the typical Allgäu brown cattle graze. In between are deeply incised ravines, as certain stream valleys are called in Swabian. Cosy farmhouses clad in wooden shingles sit enthroned on the hills of the foothills. And while the view in some narrow Alpine valleys is restricted as if by a shutter, here it can roam freely over the undulating countryside. I've been told that the view from the tower on the Black Ridge is marvellous. But I'm still only dreaming about it.
