One kilometre below Thuringia lies the deepest biking area in the world. If you want to explore the former mine by bike, you need to be fit and have strong nerves. But you can leave your rain gear at home. (BIKE 2/2006)

Horror sells like hot cakes in the Thuringian town of Sondershausen. Even on this Saturday. Excited tourists crowd in front of the ticket office of the "Glückauf" mine and listen to the instructions for the booked "ride to hell". Admittedly, we also feel a little queasy. Tino quickly screws the light onto his bike. Kerstin and Yvonne fill up the water bottles. We can only hear our mate Riedel's speech with one ear. But the snippets of words really tickle our nerves. It's completely dark down there. If you get lost in the labyrinth, don't move until help arrives. However, in view of the extensive shaft system, this could take some time. But the weather down there is great - as warm as Malle. That's exactly why we're here.
