Germany: Franconian Lake District
The picture is deceptive: the seven Franconian lakes in the south-west of Nuremberg are surrounded by towels in summer. But bikers have free rein on the trails in the hinterland.

We are in Middle Franconia, in the Franconian Lake District. An extremely sparsely populated and actually lonely region. Actually. Because a monumental plan began to be realised here a good thirty years ago: Seven reservoirs were created, fed by the Altmühl and Danube rivers, which now supply the dry north of Bavaria with drinking water. A side effect: as the water level rose, so did the attractiveness of the region. And so, in the summer months, bathing holidaymakers and water sports enthusiasts flock to the shores of the lakes. The reddish sandy beaches of Lake Brombach almost have a Caribbean flair. All that's missing are the palm trees.

Between Brombachsee and Altmühltal

However, the fact that you can also find wonderful mountain bike trails in the surrounding area has hardly got around yet. Because as busy as the trails around the lakes can sometimes be, the area remains just as lonely when you are only a few kilometres away from the shores.
