What the Franconian limestone cliffs are to free climbers, the Alb trails are to bikers: narrow, steep and always a little exposed. GPS data included as a free download.

I worked my way up from the Pegnitz valley along lonely forest paths. Always trusting the arrow on the display of my GPS device, without which I would have been hopelessly lost in the labyrinth of the German forest. Down by the river, where the rainwater that had disappeared was gushing out again, I could have refreshed my supplies. But the bike was rolling just fine. First over a few nice single trails from the Anka valley over to the Kipfental, then down to Velden. There it was vertical limestone that diverted my attention from my dry throat. Climbers call the steep walls directly on the banks of the Pegnitz "The Beach". The beach turned out to be a green strip barely a metre wide in places between the river and the rock, on which a path led me further downstream.
