"Where are we going? Mongolia, Patagonia, the Caucasus?"
"Black Forest."
"Cherry pie bobble hat Black Forest? The Black Forest?"
"Exactly. Prof Brinkmann, cuckoo clock, hunter's fence. The Black Forest."
"What are we supposed to do there?" Andi's voice sounds disappointed.
"Adventure, of course."
Who said that adventures can only be experienced in faraway countries? An adventure tour can start behind the nearest Christmas tree. Pack a light sleeping bag and you'll be independent. Open up your senses. And above all: don't plan everything. If you already know where you're staying, what you're eating and what you're going to see and when, you can stay at home.
Our plan is more than bold: starting in Freiburg, travelling north through the Black Forest and back through the Rhine plain and the Vosges mountains. We are taking six days for this, because we want to explore, not rush.
As we crank up the Schlossberg behind Freiburg Minster, a liberated feeling sets in: finally on the road! Under the young leaves of the beech trees on the Rosskopf, everyday life fizzles out. The effort feels good: the bike swings rhythmically uphill under your body. Twitching reflections of light bring the trail to life. The spicy scent of pine fills your nose. Is this what freedom smells like? I look around me: Everyone has a grin on their face, even Andi, who would have loved to have biked through Mongolia. Now we're in the middle of Germany and yet far away. We are following one of the most beautiful trails that the Black Forest has to offer.
