The Hanseatic towns of Havelberg and Tangermünde and the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt, Magdeburg, are just as worthwhile as a short detour to the ring sanctuary of Pömmelte, the German Stonehenge.

According to myth, witches dance on the noses of visitors to the forest in the Harz Mountains and devils are up to mischief. So it's better to stay on your guard. Perhaps it is no coincidence that the landscape around the Brocken challenges sporty cyclists with its dense forests and many a sweat-inducing climb. The reward is the view of the collegiate church of St Servatius and the historic old town of Quedlinburg.

The Elbe cycle path Cycling along the "Blue Ribbon"

According to the ADFC, the Elbe Cycle Route is one of the most popular cycle routes in Germany. You can start the Elbe Cycle Path in Prague or Bohemia and then cover almost 1,000 kilometres to the mouth of the river in the North Sea. In Saxony-Anhalt, the Elbe Cycle Path runs for 337 kilometres east from Bad Schmiedeberg to just before Schnackenburg. The starting point of the Elbe Cycle Path is south of the town of Pretzsch and leads past the Düben Heath Nature Park. You then reach the Lutherstadt Wittenberg and cycle through the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Kingdom to the Bauhaus town of Dessau. Passing the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve and the mouth of the Saale near Barby, you reach Magdeburg. The route then leads to the Magdeburg waterway junction, cycling right next to the Elbe under the impressive trough bridge. The route then leads through the Altmark region with its rural charm and abundance of nature as well as through the former imperial residence town of Tangermünde. Past the mouth of the Havel and with a detour to the cathedral and island town of Havelberg, the route leads through unspoilt nature. Here, the Elbe cycle path leads through a section where the Elbe was a German-German border river for decades.
