You can go on a pilgrimage on foot, by donkey, horse, bike or e-bike. Religious motives may or may not play a role these days. Pilgrimage is derived from the Latin "per" and "ager", which means: beyond the field, i.e. beyond the familiar. And so you should ask yourself which habits (Facebook, Twitter, TV ...) and familiar objects (smartphone, sat nav) you can do without on a pilgrimage. If you are very structured in everyday life, you can take a more relaxed approach when travelling. Conversely, a fixed framework with precisely defined daily stages is more appropriate. Keep a diary!

Dining in the Gothic cloister: In the museum café in Regensburg (Dachauplatz 4, www.cafe-im-museum.de), you can enjoy breakfast, homemade cakes, tarts and small dishes and savour the historic ambience of a former Franciscan monastery.
