The river sets the route to the destination in Trier, Germany's oldest city. Even less fit cyclists feel safe on the Kyll cycle path, as there are 18 railway stations along the route where you can load your bike onto the train at any time.

We start our Eifel diagonal at the confluence of the three headwaters of the Kyll at the German-Belgian border. Highlights on the tour include Hillesheim, the town of Eifel thrillers, the ice and millstone caves in Birresborn and the Eifelpark near Gondorf. Sporty cyclists can cycle the long-distance cycle route in one day, while leisure cyclists can take two to three days.

The route is flat to slightly hilly for long stretches along the Cologne-Trier railway line. There is only one major incline near Kyllburg. Around 120 km of the route is tarmac, the rest is on surfaced paths. The signposting with the cycle path logo is laid out in both directions in accordance with ADFC guidelines.

Family tip

On the Kyll cycle path, a section of around 20 kilometres between Gerolstein and Densborn is specially designated as a children's cycle path.

Tour combinations

The 20-kilometre Kalkeifel cycle path is a worthwhile detour. It leads from Hillesheim to Ahrdorf and connects the Kyll cycle path with the Ahr cycle path. The Kyll cycle path has connections to other cycle paths: in Stadtkyll (Prüm cycle path), in Gerolstein (Eifel-Ardennes cycle path), in Bitburg-Erdorf (Nims cycle path), in Trier-Ehrang (Moselle cycle path).

Arrival/means of transport

You can return to the starting point from many points. The railway stations of Jünkerath, Gerolstein, Kyllburg, Bitburg-Erdorf, Kordel and Ehrang are particularly recommended for combined cycle tours by train and bike, as all trains stop there. www.bahn.de
