Between Hagen and Dortmund, the Ruhr has carved its way into the Ardey Mountains. The sides of its canyon are up to 150 metres high. Hohensyburg Castle towers above the confluence of the Lenne and Ruhr rivers on the northern high bank. Here, the Hengsteysee forms the start of a total of four Ruhr reservoirs up to the estuary near Duisburg. Many single trails can be found directly on the ridge of Hohensyburg and around its neighbour Klusenberg. The XR/XW hiking trail, which starts directly at the Kaiser Wilhelm monument and winds its way steeply down to the Ruhr, is challenging in places. Parallel to this, the Syburg Mining Trail offers a look back at the history of the old tunnels and mines. At Klusenberg, trails with names such as "Little Lake Garda" (A3/A4) and "Quarry" beckon. Route tip: Follow the Ruhrhöhenweg (XR) to Witten and cycle back comfortably on the Ruhr cycle path. There are particularly beautiful views between Herdecke and Wetter. In the second part, numerous trail branches between Wetter and Witten are waiting to be explored. At the weekend, however, you can expect many day trippers on the paths at Hohensyburg. Consideration is therefore paramount!
