The Müritz is the largest lake that lies entirely within Germany. But of course it is not the only one in the Mecklenburg Lake District, which is often referred to as the "Land of 1,000 Lakes" for good reason. So there are plenty of opportunities for the popular summer combination of cycling and swimming, especially in the illustrious beach resorts of Waren, Klink and Röbel an der Müritz.
With more than 100 square kilometres of water, the Müritz is a tourist hotspot. To the north is the so-called "Mecklenburg Switzerland", a hilly area around Lake Malchin and Lake Kummerow. The starting point, Waren an der Müritz, is easily reached by train.
We have divided our best-of cycle tour through the Mecklenburg Lake District into 5 stages:
Stages
DAY 1: Waren - Müritz National Park - Rechlin - Ludorf - Röbel; approx. 53 km, 100 metres elevation gain
Almost exclusively cycle paths - the Müritz circuit is very popular.
DAY 2: Röbel - Göhren-Lebbin - Malchow - Nossentiner Heide - Gutshaus Linstow; approx. 55 km, 140 metres elevation gain
Quiet country ride on side roads. Plan to stop in Malchow for lunch.
DAY 3: Linstow - Lake Malchin - Basedow Castle - Bredenfelde; approx. 68 km, 620 m ascent
Mecklenburg Switzerland" makes this stage as attractive as it is undulating.
DAY 4: Bredenfelde - Ankershagen - Penzlin - Neustrelitz; approx. 53 km, 300 m ascent
Quiet country ride on side roads.
DAY 5: Neustrelitz - Kratzeburg - Müritz NP - Waren; approx. 42 km, 180 m ascent
Quiet forests and small lakes.
