ALPENGUIDE: Germany: Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Esterbergalm
The Esterbergalm is a Garmisch-Partenkirchen classic, as the steepest ramp in the region leads up to it. A few years ago, the Esterberg bike race for the German Cup took place on this route.

Bikers face a whopping 26 per cent gradient at the steepest point. But after 550 metres in altitude, the idyllic alpine pasture is reached. The unbelievable: Back when the mountain race was still held, the fastest riders only needed just under half an hour to complete the 6.2-kilometre route. After a short rest on the idyllic alpine pasture, the route descends up and down the Finzbach valley. The trail climbs once again via Rindberg and Gschwandtnerbauer. Shortly before Schlattan, a footpath that is closed to bikers turns off. But it's worth pushing, the view of the Wetterstein is magnificent! In Partenkirchen, head back up to the Panorama Café before descending to the Wankbahn car park on the approach route.

Tour data: 28.08 km, 1070 m elevation gain, 2 h 45 min

Since Gitta crossed the Alps twice at racing speed, she has favoured multi-day tours - by MTB in the Alps or by gravel bike through the German low mountain ranges.
