Cycling along the Freiberger Mulde is relaxed and close to nature. The route out of the valley may be a little arduous, but a rewarding surprise awaits. The Mulde valley around Rechenberg-Bienenmühle is tranquil.

Here, the Ore Mountains have preserved all the tranquillity that city dwellers seek between mountain and valley. Here they unload their bikes from the car roof and set off for a perfect day on the saddle. It starts comfortably: alongside the course of the Freiberg Mulde, the route winds along the narrow valley road, which is so little used that it also serves as a section of the Mulde cycle path. Nature reigns supreme on both sides of the road and the alternation of shady woodland and green meadows provides just enough unagitated variety to ensure that cycling never gets boring. This warm-up phase lasts until you reach the entrance to Mulda - then you have to make a decision. You can either start pedalling up the ridge to the left of the river right away. Or a little later. In the latter case, there is still time for a cultural stop in nearby Helbigsdorf.

A real treasure awaits visitors to the medieval parish church: an original instrument by the famous Saxon organ builder Gottfried Silbermann. It dates back to 1728 and can still be heard today. The church itself is also worth seeing, as its baroque interior design also dates back to Silbermann's time.

On the wrong track

But after the church tour at the latest, it's time to say goodbye: Adieu Muldental! For a few kilometres, thigh power or battery power is now required. Blockhausen is the next destination and is probably one of the highlights of this little Erzgebirge tour, and not just geographically. You can already see that a few drops of sweat are well spent on the approach through the forest. At first there are only a few wooden sculptures, but just a few metres further on you are right in the middle of Blockhausen.

Every child knows what a log cabin is. But with Blockhausen, Andreas Martin has developed the idea of a simple wooden hut in the wilderness into a very special village. As a "sow sawyer", Martin has long been known in the region for his creations: chainsaw-carved wild boars. For years, he travelled internationally with his unusual hobby and even became European champion in chainsaw carving. Since 2004, he has been organising the "Huskycup" competition in Blockhausen every year at Whitsun. And since then, the sculpture park at the edge of the forest has been constantly growing with new works of art by the world's best chainsaw carvers.

Blockhausen is also a rustic resting place for hikers and cyclists, who can enjoy a snack at the snack bar between April and October in hiking weather. A hot tip - in the truest sense of the word - is the venison sausage.

After this refreshment for body and soul, you can leisurely make your way back towards the Mulde valley. This leads through Dorfchemnitz and Clausnitz, then a little further over the heights towards Steinkuppe. Incidentally, it takes you along a wonderfully developed cycle route through the middle of the forest. When the pine forest clears, the cycle tour is almost over in the upper part of Rechenberg-Bienenmühle. If you're in a hurry, you can take the steep mountain road down to the starting point. Everyone else can enjoy the short diversions through the forest past the Teichhaus. This then leads a few more very cosy kilometres through the valley and past the Rechenberg eco-pool. Perhaps cooling off after a good 40 kilometres will do you good ...
