Along the former border strip to the Baltic Sea
The inner-German border fell in November 1989. The horror of the former death strip is now only a background noise. Book author Henri Lesewitz followed the Green Belt from Bavaria to the Baltic Sea on his bike.

Twenty-two years have passed since the fall of the inner-German border. The former death strip has become overgrown and the 1378 kilometre-long strip has been declared a "Green Belt" nature conservation project. The place that turned the GDR into a human cage is now sprawling nature. A symbol, filled with myth.

Germany should grow together. In a botanical sense, this may work splendidly. But what about the mood on both sides of the former Iron Curtain? My tour is a border crossing and border experience in one. By bike along the Green Belt. From Bavaria to the shores of the Baltic Sea. Not exactly to every point, just the general direction. With a tent and only the bare essentials: ultra-crushable sleeping bag, toothbrush, bank card. An adventure in Germany instead of just anywhere else in the world.
