4-day mountain bike tour along the Altmühltal valley
Two trails lead along the Altmühl: one with zero elevation gain, the other with over 5000 metres of singletrack.

"Only 200 kilometres and not even through any real mountains, that should be easy to manage in three days," says Christian, but bites into a piece of poppy seed cake to be on the safe side. Yes, it should, actually. At this point, we had no idea that the tour would be anything but easy. After all, the Altmühltal is an Eldorado for leisure cyclists. Attracted in droves by the simple fact that water generally flows downhill - meaning that a path following the riverbank promises wellness-orientated pedalling. And so, in summer, whole caravans of cyclists roll from beer garden to beer garden. For us, such an excess of relaxation is out of the question. So we came across the Altmühltal Panorama Trail.

The Altmühltal Panorama Trail leads from Gunzenhausen on Lake Altmühlsee to Kelheim. Parking is available near the railway station. The signposting (yellow/red emblem) starts from the centre of Gunzenhausen and is easy to spot while driving. It is hardly necessary to look at the map en route. Data: 200 kilometres/5550 metres in altitude. Sporty bikers can complete the tour in three days, otherwise it is better to plan four stages. The proportion of single trails and forest paths is very high, followed by gravel paths. There are virtually no tarmac sections. On steep climbs, you will have to reckon with pushing sections, but these rarely last longer than ten minutes. The most difficult section leads through the gorge near Riedenburg.

Tour 1: Gunzenhausen - Dollnstein The longest stage right at the start: the route leads along forest and woodland paths to Treuchtlingen. The climbs are short but crisp. Then the route becomes increasingly interspersed with trail sections. Particularly steep climbs await you behind Eßlingen and Mörnsheim, with very beautiful views at Spielberg Castle. Great: the Steinerne Rinne near Wolfsbronn and the Twelve Apostles.Photo: BIKE Magazin Tour 1: Gunzenhausen - Dollnstein The longest stage right at the start: the route leads along forest and woodland paths to Treuchtlingen. Tour 2: Dollnstein - Unteremmendorf The singletrail stage! However, the rhythm changes also become more extreme. Almost every climb has a short pushing section, but the rideable sections have maximum fun factor. The highlights: the fossil quarry just before Eichstätt, the old town centre of Eichstätt, the viewpoint behind Arnsberg and the peat rock.Photo: BIKE Magazin Tour 2: Dollnstein - Unteremmendorf The singletrail stage! Tour 3: Unteremmendorf - Kehlheim The elevation profile remains challenging, with only the sections along the Altmühl cycle path providing relief. But the next steep ramp is sure to follow. The climb up to the Teufelsfelsen is particularly painful. At the top, however, you can enjoy a magnificent view and an even more perfect trail.
